Tips to Reduce Remodel Stresses
Arizona Republic (02/14/09) Romero, Rosie
Rosie Romero, an Arizona contractor with 35 years of home-building and remodeling experience, offers some tips to couples who are considering a remodel of their homes designed to alleviate the stress associated with inconveniences such as having strangers in the home all day and cost overruns. First, Romero suggests getting the work done now as many contractors are underemployed and will therefore have the time to complete the project quickly. Couples should know exactly what they want done before they call a contractor and be flexible in case a desired item is not available, making an A- and B-list of products. Someone with remodeling experience should be hired to manage the project. To protect against the stress of facing unexpected charges, homeowners should plan to pay up to 20 percent more than expected.
Sustainable Flooring
Showercork flooring is made with 1/4-inch pieces of cork cut from post-industrial wine corks in Spain and Portugal. The durable material is suitable for wet applications such as shower floors and pool surrounds, is slip resistant, comes prefinished or unfinished, and offers thermal and acoustical properties. Sheets come 12 inches by 24 inches; lay sheets on top of thinset mortar or an oil-modified adhesive, cut with utility knife as needed, stain if desired, apply sanded grout to fill joints, and then finish with polyurethane. 303-544-6076. www.sustainableflooring.com
